Fidel Castro Resigns as Cuban President
Fidel Castro announced today he is resigning as Cuban president, ending forty-nine years in office. In a statement, the eighty-one-year-old Castro wrote, “It would betray my conscience to take up a responsibility that requires mobility and total devotion, that I am not in a physical condition to offer.” We speak to Peter Kornbluh, director of the Cuba Documentation Project at the National Security Archive.
AMY GOODMAN: President Bush is in Rwanda today, part of his five African country tour. When he learned of this announcement of the resignation of Fidel Castro, he said, “The US will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty.”
(bd: I think I know what the Cuban people are thinking: "PLEASE DON'T HELP US REALIZE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY LIKE YOU HELPED IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN REALIZE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY!!!")
