Music To Torture By

Rage Against the Machine ... protesting against Guantanamo Bay at the Reading festival.

Musicians don't want tunes used for torture

U.S. military interrogators have often blasted music at detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. According to the British law group Reprieve, these are among the songs they have used most frequently:

• "Enter Sandman," Metallica.
• "Bodies," Drowning Pool.
• "Shoot to Thrill," AC/DC.
• "Hell's Bells," AC/DC.
• "I Love You," from the "Barney and Friends" children's TV show.
• "Born in the USA," Bruce Springsteen.
• "Babylon," David Gray.
• "White America," Eminem.
• "Sesame Street," theme song from the children's TV show.

British human rights group Reprieve has launched a new anti-music torture initiative, Zero dB.

Musicians protest military use of music as torture

Reprieve uses the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners, from death row to Guantánamo Bay.

Summer Means Oldies Tours

Summer is here and that means oldies bands get together to tour so we can all get that nostalgic feeling of yesteryear: music of the 50's, 60's, and 70's. A staple band in these tours is the Four Tops. They had a slew of hits beginning in the early 60's such as "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I'll Be There".

But oldies bands now face a dilemma of having to change their names due to deaths of original band members, legalities and just plain old accuracy.

Big Dan interviews the Four Top's lead singer Levi Stubbs:

Big Dan: So, tell us about the new names of the oldies bands we've known for years, Levi.

Stubbs: Well, Big Dan, as you know, most of these bands have been around for decades and they're undergone many changes over the years. To cut to the chase, many band members have flat out died of old age. But we keep chugging along, and the people are nostalgic and still want to hear the old tunes done live. They love us!

Big Dan: The name changes, can you tell us about some of them?

Stubbs: Some people claim it's misleading to keep the same band name if members have died or moved on, especially bands with numbers in their names, or the band name has a person's name in it, and that person isn't in the band anymore. They have a point.

Big Dan: Can you give us an example?

Stubbs: Take our band, for instance, "The Four Tops". One of our orignal members died a while back, and some fans were saying, "You aren't the original 'Four Tops', what a ripoff!" So, for legal purposes such as not giving them their money back, our band changed the name to, "The Three Tops". We were thinking of changing it to a catch-all name like, "The Surviving Tops" so we won't have to change it if another one of us dies, to "The Two Tops".

Big Dan: What about bands with people's names in it, and that person isn't in the band anymore, like say "J. Geils Band" joined the oldies tour and J. Geils wasn't in the band?

Stubbs: Well, we do have that case in this tour, funny you mention it. The band Santana is with us, but Santana isn't in the band. In fact, only Santana's lead singer is in the band. They call themselves, "Santana's Lead Singer". Some bands like "The Who" add national characters after their name. They sang "I hope I die before I get old", and the band "The Who?????" are made up of the members that got old before they died.

Big Dan: What are the band names in this year's tour?

Stubbs: Before I give you the list, I'd just like to drive home the point that if people ask for their money back, they ain't gettin' it this year! We've complied with these band name changes. Here's this year's tour's lineup, and as a special treat this year, it will be MC'd by "The Odd Person", one of the original "Odd Couple"...and remember, Rock On, everybody:

● The Three Tops

Death Cab For Cutie

The band Death Cab For Cutie.

As I've told everybody, I recently got XM radio, and I LOVE IT! My favorite music channel is "Ethel", and I also like the 60's Decades channel. And so many others!

It introduced me to lots of new music. I fell I've been becoming a "dinosaur", listening to the same old songs all the time, over and over, on my vinyl records and CD's.

This song is out right now, and I'm addicted to it! "I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab For Cutie. This is the album version with the long bass riff intro. The intro begins with an extremely catchy bass riff that goes throughout the song. After a while, drums are added, then echoey guitar and keyboards, and it builds until about 4:30 into the song, the vocals start and the intense intro fades into nothing and the vocals are just by themselves, pretty nifty!

I played bass in a rock band (see picture on lower right of blog), and YES...I immediately figured out this catchy bass riff! I LOVE IT!!!

The music and lyrics go together well in this intense "haunting" song. The echoey guitars and piano are tasteful, and the drumming goes along solidly with that bass riff. The song gets better with each listen, the sign of a truely great song. This song is a GEM! Listen to it! Play it a few times...LOUD! Hopefully, you have good speakers. This song will "possess your heart". I'm glad there's new groups putting out quality stuff like this!

"I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab For Cutie (lyrics)

How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound, but in a language that you can't read - just yet
You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart (x2) (x2)

There are days when outside your window, I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective, when we'll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart(x2) (x2)

You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you, let me down so easily, so easily

You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart (x3)

"Black Friday" by Steely Big Dan

In honor of the bad economy, one of my all-time favorite groups, inspired by BlueBear's post:

When Black Friday comes, I'll stand down by the door.
And catch the grey men when they dive from the fourteenth floor.

When Black Friday comes, I'll collect everything I'm owed.
And before my friends find out I'll be on the road.

When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be, Don't let it fall on me

When Black Friday comes, I'll fly down to Muswellbrook.
Gonna strike all the big red words From my little black book.

Gonna do just what I please, Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed All the kangaroos

When Black Friday comes I'll be on that hill, You know I will

When Black Friday comes, I'm gonna dig myself a hole
Gonna lay down in it 'til satisfy my soul

Gonna let the world pass by me, The Archbishop's gonna sanctify me
And if he don't come across I'm gonna let it roll

When Black Friday comes, I'm gonna stake my claim
I'll guess I'll change my name

Steely Dan now...and then!

A "Piddy-Post" For Ya!

Here he is, "Mr. Piddles" our new cat. We never had a cat before, we're "dog people". He was our niece's cat, but she found out she can't have a cat in her apartment in Philadelphia. She gave it to my parents, but they have been in ill health lately, and can't take care of it. GODAMMIT! I hate cats! Well, not this one...I kinda like him! BTW, we now exclusively call him "Piddy". Here is Little De with "Piddy":

I found this video on the tubes of the internet(s), it's adorable! It's a jazzy little tune about a cat. Here's one of my all time favorite songs "Maceo" by one of my all time favorite groups Jane's Addiction, who we saw at Lollapalooza a few years ago:

Ladies and Gentlemen: THE BEATLES!

This is where it all began. In their early twenties, the Beatles came on the scene and the music world never saw and heard such great original-sounding rock music with urgency in its vocals and playing like this...it was like they came from another planet. Their infectious smiles were not even fair! They took music as it was, and sent it off in another direction never to be the same again. Disliking the Beatles would be akin to disliking the sun!

John Lennon's vocals are extremely powerful in "Twist & Shout", "This Boy", and "Please, Mr. Postman". I think Lennon's early Beatles vocals are the most powerful in rock history. How can 3 guys in their early twenties do 3-part harmony like that, in "This Boy"?

1 in 10 Americans Should Have Their Voting Privileges Revoked

Mission Accomplished, corporate mainstream media! You got 1 in 10 American Idiot voters to believe that Barack Obama is Muslim! If this doesn't scare you, YOU should ALSO not be allowed to vote! If you are turning a blind eye to this fact because it's not "your candidate", YOU should ALSO not be allowed to vote! Because YOU are part of the PROBLEM, too!!! Maybe you also think that Obama fathered a two-headed gay terrorist baby!

Why don't we just split the nation in half, and all the American Idiots can have no health care, McCain as president, wars sucking all their tax money...that would be fine with me! Knock yourself out! You can HAVE half the country, it's fine by me!

And for you American Idiots who keep calling in our local WILK radio talk shows saying, "I don't want MY tax money going towards bailing out homeowners who can't pay their mortages"...GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT! YOU just bailed out the BILLIONAIRE LENDERS, you American Idiots! There was no bailout of the people losing their homes, only a bailout for the billionaire lenders! With YOUR tax money, that you're saying you don't want to go towards the people losing their homes! And you didn't say a THING about THAT on WILK!!! Because you are STUPID!!! Mission Accomplished, AGAIN, corporate media and American Idiots!!!

Keep listening to Rush Limbaugh, you American Idiots!!! Follow along with these lyrics by these "freaks" who are smarter than YOU are!!!

GREEN DAY LYRICS

"American Idiot"

Don't want to be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along to the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Don't want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Fool On The Hill

Gold-digger Heather Mills does what everybody thought would happen when she married Beatle and idiot Paul McCartney: divorce him for tens-of-millions of dollars...

Dummy Paul McCartney has to give ex-wife Heather Mills $50 million dollars as part of their divorce settlement. Contrary to what every rational human being thought, Paul McCartney thought he could marry someone after Linda McCartney died, and it would turn out good.

Here's what I thought when McCartney married Heather Mills: I thought she'd divorce him and get $50 million dollars.

Below: Mills & "Sir" Paul McCartney in better times...all 5 seconds of them!!!

Time To Post 2 Ramones Videos!

Based in the Forest Hills section of Queens, NY, The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early '60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary.

"Our early songs came out of our real feelings of alienation, isolation, frustration -- the feelings everybody feels between seventeen and seventy-five," said singer Joey Ramone. Clocking in at just under twenty-nine minutes, Ramones is an intense blast of guitar power, rhythmic simplicity and ferocious brevity, a complete rejection of the spangled artifice and hollow, artsy pretensions of 1970s rock. The songs were fast and anti-social, just like the band: "Beat on the Brat," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue." Guitarist Johnny Ramone refused to play solos -- his jackhammer chords became the lingua franca of punk -- and the whole record cost just over $600 to make. But Joey's leather-tender plea "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" showed that even punks need love.

Total album sales: Under 500,000

Peak chart position: 111

I Told You So...Again! What is the RIAA really up to?

I'm doing a lot of "remember when I posted this?" lately. But, remember when I posted this? I said, what's the real reason behind the RIAA suing people for downloading music?

Well, in a Washington Post article, check this out:

Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

Did you get that? The RIAA is now twisting their downloading cases into not letting anyone who legally purchased music make copies for themselves! So, if you don't write them a blackmail check and you fight back, you won't be able to copy your legally purchased songs to your PC, either! Did I "tell you so"??? The suing for downloading is a "red herring" for the RIAA's real plans!

I have a question, too: If you are not downloading music, but have songs on your computer from copying your legally purchased CD's, how can they tell the difference? And how did they know you had that music on your computer, if you're not downloading? Is the RIAA illegally invading your privacy???

We Got Screwed Again At A Chinese Buffet!

Me, Sherlock, & Drumbo had our weekly Chinese meeting today. We call them Chinese meetings, even though we stopped going to Chinese buffets due to the decrease in quality and increase in price. Sometimes we call them "donut meetings" or "Big Lebowski meetings", too. I'm the Dude, Sherlock is Donny, and Drumbo is Walter. Once my son went to a Chinese meeting with us, and he said we were exactly like the "Big Lebowski" movie.

Anyway, what do you think this is below?

I was eating some beef & peppers, and Sherlock said, "Is that a funnel in your food?" It's a piece of beef shaped like a funnel! I said the above picture looks like a witch's hat! From different angles, it looks like other things. Below, it looks like a "horn of plenty."

Below, is the original angle, in which it looks like the funnel. Why did I bring it home with me? It's hard to find tiny funnels, and I needed one to refill my automatic shower cleaner bottles. YOU try and find a funnel that small!

The food was terrible, nothing was good...as usual. I have a theory why we keep going back to Chinese buffets: We think of how good they are when they first open up, just to sucker you in, and you've got to forget about that! It was Drumbo's fault, he'll admit it, most likely in a comment later after I post this. Horrible food! Ughhhhh! Why do we keeping eating at Chinese buffets?

Time For A Video! "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve

In case anyone hasn't noticed, I have the lyrics of "Bittersweet Symphony" scrolling on the lower right on my blog...

Bitter Sweet Symphony Lyrics » The Verve

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Your a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can't change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

I can't change my mold
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
That you've ever been down
That you've ever been down

Gene Simmons: Gene Simmons: college kids killed music biz

"Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning." (multi-millionaire & lousy musician Gene Simmons of KISS)

Personally, I never liked KISS, and I really don't like Gene Simmons. I saw him on several talk shows, and he is one of the most egotistical assholes I've ever seen. I really think KISS was a terrible band, if you strictly go by their music. Of course, the make-up, dolls, etc...was unique, but the music stunk! In fact, I think if they didn't have that make-up schtick, no one would have bought their albums. An absolutely horrible band, musically.

Here's what some other artists think about downloading from this NYTimes article File-Sharing Battle Leaves Musicians Caught in Middle :

"Moby suggested that the music companies treat users of file-sharing services like fans instead of criminals. "How can a 14-year-old who has an allowance of $5 a week feel bad about downloading music produced by multimillionaire musicians and greedy record companies""

"Serj Tankian of the hard-rock band System of a Down, for example, said he thought that the free exchange of songs by his band and others online was healthy for music fans, but objected when that free exchange included unfinished studio recordings. "

My personal opinion, is that CD's are too expensive and they often skip, and the jewel cases they come in break. I always loved vinyl record albums. The artwork was larger, you got full-size posters, lyrics you could read, gatefold covers, etc... In fact, I still buy vinyl record albums at record shows and I play record albums much more than CD's, even today.

A solution I thought of, would be to charge $5 for a CD with a lifetime guarantee that you could even-exchange it on the spot if it skipped, cracked, etc... I know that I always think twice about buying a $20 CD, but if they were $5, I'd buy 4 CD's everytime I walked past a record store! And I know for a fact, that it costs pennies to make a CD, because I have a friend who worked as a plant manager at Specialty Records in Scranton for years. $20 is outrageous and, like I said, they're not indestructible...they skip all the time! At least for me.

It's also a fact that musicians make more money touring than from CD sales. Who's getting all the money from those CD sales? Not the artists! Probably the companies making the CD's! I also think the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has alienated fans by suing them for downloading. Let me get this straight: they're suing their fans!!! Way to go, on the "good business" front! On many occassions I've bought a CD because I've downloaded a song from the CD and liked the song. I think in that case downloading caused a CD sale, if I'm correct.

Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno have started MUDDA (Magnificent Union of Digitally Downloading Artist) to give musicians an alternative to the RIAA/CD/record business.

There may be a more sinister angle to the RIAA's tactic of suing individuals thousands of dollars for downloading.

"Suppose these RIAA lawsuites are a red herring, and they are not ultimately trying to discourage the infringing downloads of RIAA members music. What if this is all about stopping consumers from downloading legitimate, freely distributable music? The RIAA member labels are the big losers in a world without Big Media gatekeepers, so perhaps all this nonsense is really cover for them to associate all downloading of digital music with crime, corruption and badness. " (click here)

As of July 2006, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sued over 20,000 music fans for file sharing in just under three years. In 2004, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) joined this misguided, anti-consumer crusade. Filing lawsuits against anonymous "Doe" defendants, the RIAA and MPAA seek to uncover the identities of P2P users and force them to pay thousands of dollars in settlements. Many innocent individuals are being caught in the crossfire. While there is no way to know exactly what the RIAA and MPAA are going to do or who they are going to sue, users of publicly-accessible P2P networks can take the following steps to reduce their chances of being sued: (click here)

Boy Sets Fire! (a great band)

Well, it's solved! A boy set the California fires! It was on CNN, CBS, FOX, all of them!

So, a juvenile boy told the police he set 38,000 acres of California on fire. How did that happen? Did he walk up to them, and say, "I'm the one who set California on fire? What if he was lying? I thought Al Qaeda did it! Does this boy work for Al Qaeda? I think there ought to be a law that little boys can play with matches (I did) and not have to worry about 38,000 acres of California catching on fire! What's going to happen to this boy?

If 38,000 acres could be set on fire by a spark, wasn't it just an accident waiting to happen? Right now, there are thousands of acres waiting to burn by a spark! Whose fault is that?

So, I guess it's "case closed"! A little boy did it! Let's put him in Gitmo! And not determine where the next couple of thousand acres will go off with a spark!

Do you think his favorite band is Boy Sets Fire? (My Space)

Two Interesting 1-Hit Wonders

I saw this show on VH1: "One Hit Wonders", and thought I'd toss out these 2 interesting videos.

1. 1985-Mary Jane Girls: "In My House"

I actually bought this single years ago, I still have the single! I like the song, never saw the video until this VH1 special. I do like funky songs like this, "Play That Funky Music", some funky Sly Stone songs, and groups with a funky sound like Level 42, Prince, and Beck. This song is actually written by Rick (Super Freak) James, bitch!!! I didn't know this, either: "Mary Jane" was Rick James' favorite drug, and this band was his creation! The Mary Jane Girls very quickly disbanded due to the drugs, violence, and jailtime of Rick James. But yet, years later, successfully marketted girl-groups like the Spice Girls, patterned themselves after the Mary Jane Girls. They are all moms now and in their present day interviews, they were very, very nice women with great senses of humor! They said if they didn't disband because of all the turmoil, they would've been on lunchboxes, t-shirts, etc...like the Spice Girls were! You can tell Rick James wrote this song (bitch!). Love him or hate him, he wrote 2 killer songs: this one and "Super Freak"! I actually think this song is better than "Super Freak"! Don't get the Mary Jane Girls confused with Prince-offshoot girl groups...this is Rick James, bitch! And I like the video. Hmmm...I wonder why...can't figure it out! Something very attractive about this video!

2. 1976-The Andrea True Connection: "More More More"

I've heard this song a million times. What didn't I know? Andrea True was an X-rated porn star before releasing this video! Did you know that? Apparently a lot of people did, according to the commentors on VH1. I didn't! Duh!!! In fact, it showed her in one of her X-rated videos (naughty bits blacked out on VH1, of course) having sex and passionately screaming, "More More More"! That must've inspired this song...ahem...sorry, I had to clear my throat for a second... Also, it showed a clip from one of her X-movies of a guy saying, "I thought you were a red-head" She replied, "That won't matter with the lights off!" So, now there's new meaning to her lyrics, "Get the cameras rollin', get the action going, More More More, how da ya like it? How da ya like it?" This song will never be the same for me after knowing this! How do you like your love?
