Friday morning Facebook changed its privacy settings layout, making it a bit more challenging to opt out completely. As before, unchecking the "Allow" box is not sufficient because you need to block each Instant Personalization website to fully opt out. However, the previous path (via "Learn More") to the necessary Block Application buttons was removed, with Facebook suggesting instead you first go to the sites (at which point your information is disclosed), and then click "'No Thanks' on the blue Facebook notification on the top of partner sites." In the fateful hours before the Deepwater Horizon exploded about 50 miles off the Louisiana shore, a safety test was supposedly performed to detect if explosive gas was leaking from the mile-deep well.
While some data were being transmitted to shore for safekeeping right up until the blast, officials from Transocean, the rig owner, told Congress that the last seven hours of its information are missing and that all written logs were lost in the explosion. Earlier tests that suggested explosive gas was leaking were preserved.
The gap poses a mystery for investigators: What decisions were made -- and what warnings might have been ignored?
"There is some delay in the replication of our data, so our operational data, our sequence of events ends at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on the 20th," Steven Newman, president and CEO of Transocean Ltd, told a Senate panel. The rig blew up at 10 p.m., killing 11 workers and unleashing the gusher.
Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents several rig workers involved in the accident, questioned whether what he called "the phantom test" was even performed.

Just like Goldman Sachs, BP acted irresponsibly by recklessly pursuing profits at the expense of the American people. Both companies gambled, both companies lost, and both companies expect the taxpayer to clean up their mess. It's time both companies are held accountable.

ReplyDeleteThe state Republican Party has been taken over by the reactionary Tea bagger crowd. These folks are using the same blueprint as the Fascist Christian Right (WRONG). High jack the political process by infiltrating every level of the political machine especially the lowly local level, get elected and appointed to gain a political foothold. Rework as revamp the system to mirror your fascist conservative ideals. Then work up the ranks once you have established an incumbency. Then climb the political ladder, bringing like minded political jack booters along for the ride and eventually you will take over the political system. Become captains of the ship - then you can gain enough authority to chart the ship's course and political destinations.

Lower Merion permanently banned from webcam monitoring

A federal judge Friday permanently barred the Lower Merion School District from using webcams or other intrusive technology to secretly monitor students through their school-issued laptops.
The five-page injunction signed by U.S. District Judge Jan E. DuBois also requires the suburban district to adopt transparent and expansive policies by September to govern its student laptop program.
It says Lower Merion can implement an alternative to webcam tracking to find missing or stolen computers, but only if the technology is "conspicuously disclosed" in a document signed by students and their parents. And it says the district needs to make accommodations for students who don't want to participate.
The order was not unexpected. It followed weeks of negotiations by lawyers for the district and students' families, and it did not stray too far from the spirit of the temporary restraints the judge imposed in February. It also mirrored many of the practices Lower Merion officials had already pledged to institute.

That they need to start re-thinking their behavior toward students. End zero tolerance. An excellent quote from a comment made on one of the numerous stories nationwide reflects my exact beliefs:
This all boils down to the unethical assumption that schools are instruments of social control and that school administrators have some sort of say so on students' lives outside of school. It all started with the VP questioning what the kid was doing at home. It was like she was giving him a chance to turn himself in... We are here to educate, not to be officers of societal ethics enforcement. This whole idea that kids can be punished at school for what they do outside of school is SCARY... it is Fascist, Manipulative, and encroaches on our Constitutional Rights. Administrators now try to act like the secret social police... trying to pick up on signs of non-conformity. FIRE THE PIGS! Send the technocratic control freaks to the unemployment line and see how they feel when they have to justify what they do when they're not at work.
The Philadelphia Flyers just overcame a 3-0 series deficit and 3-0 game 4 deficit for an historic comeback series win.

I have a funny story about the Philadelphia Flyers: in the 90's, my wife's cousin from Germany came in and me, my wife, two kids, and Connie went to Canada: Niagara Falls, Toronto, etc...on vacation. We went to an amusement park, Paramount, and we were in line for a ride, and while in line this older Canadian guy said in a low, gravely voice: "You like duh hockey???" I had a Philadelphia Flyers hat on, I said "Yes". He said, "What's your favorite team?" I said, "The Philadelphia Flyers". He yelled at me: "THE FLYERS ARE A BUNCH OF BULLIES!!!" LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

And PLEASE stop using the term siphon to describe capture the removal of the oil from the well head. I realize everyone is using it - showing their stupidity!
