The bottom line is that these payments for advertising are in reality, hush money. They pay off the various media outlets to ensure they don't report any negative news about their products. That has to be the bottom line, because these ads are clearly not designed to entice you to try the product when more than half of the air time is devoted to disclaimers. They are advertising directly to doctors to let them see that they have removed any liability from them prescribing these products, by purchasing air time to run legal disclaimers. These are not consumer targeted ads. They are doctor-targeted ads that also reinforce patient brand awareness when the doctor prescribes it. The FDA and the FCC are complicit.

You could argue that Murdoch is simply a globally successful
businessman who is just printing what the
braying public wants to read. Not
only is that argument insulting, it is also naïve. It is insulting to
assume that people who read tabloids want journalists to tamper with a
missing girl's phone and bag the exclusive story about how her parents
are clinging on to the resulting false hope that she is still alive. The News of the World underestimated the morals and intelligence of their readership.
Naive
because Murdoch's ambitions go beyond the confines of his media
company. Murdoch has used his control over the media to host private
meetings with and thereby influence government leaders all over the
world. Barack Obama seems to be the only leader
to have avoided an invitation into his dark lair.
You may think, “So,
what? Government leaders meet with
leaders of industry all the time”.
Those other leaders, however, do not have the power to change headlines,
sweep stories under the carpet, and distract your attention from real issues by
moving them off the front page and replacing them with some made-up piece of
celebrity gossip.
In an Orwellian twist, the
week in which the deathly fate of the print tabloid was sealed, new media shone
a white light on the path to better journalism for the British public with the
launch of Huffington Post UK.
Tired, old, crusty Murdochian
hacks who have offered scathing dismissal of bloggers and the quality of
online journalism can now eat some humble pie and wash it down with a glug of
bitter regret.

I read that Josh Hamilton got the foul ball, and tossed it into the stands, that's what you see: not the foul ball off the bat, but Texas Rangers rightfielder tossing the foul ball into the stands. I've seen rails like that, that low, on incredibly high places in stadiums and when my kids were little, I used to be deathly afraid of them going near those low rails, I wouldn't let them NEAR them! It's stupid to put a rail that low supposedly stopping you from falling off an extremely high place. That always drove me nuts, seeing rails that low.

ReplyDeleteTonight at the Mexican restaurant the guys in the booth behind me all of a sudden got off on the gut bombers, the shoe bomber and the undershorts bomber. OMG - they were a bunch of scared little pussies, all about "they" are trying so hard to get us. I spit my coke right out in my daughters face I was trying so hard not to bust out laughing!
Of course the reason for this new totally invented threat is that there is evidence coming forward that reveals how much radiation these machines are really dosing people with - particularly the TSA workers. If they had needed a story like this to justify installing them in the first place, they'd already have used it. They saved this contrived headline and totally manufactured story to fight the inevitable push-back by the public and the medical community once they could no longer control the narrative justifying their existence. Did Michael Chertoff have this fake story written while he was still the head of Homeland Security? Bet on it.

Biggest story on the planet, nothingness happened on page 29, just matter of factly pointing out that a 168 year old "institution" was closing. No screaming front page, no nothing except the milquetoast announcement on page 29.

ReplyDeleteThink about the size of the operation that would be required to not only do the hacking, but to comb through and transcribe the information gained, then put it all in context against other realities and related parties involved in the conversations, then craft stories that hide how the information was obtained, then write and publish the stories. What else were they doing with the information? Did they engage in insider trading on the information? Did they sell any of it to governments or corporations? Did they trade favors in return for sharing the information with the British Government or Royal Family?
How many people would you need to hire to run a shop that did this? What would they need to be paid? How would their expenses for technology, informants, hackers and payoffs of police and others be covered? This is corporate espionage - corporately funded. Murdoch's son absolutely knows everything, and likely approave dit all - which also implies Rupert himself knew and approved all of it.
Rebekkah Brooks has got to be in fear of her life. Investigators have hung her out to dry, and may offer her immunity if she turns evidence against ownership. When you see Murdoch and son protecting her job and offering their full support publicly (rather than firing her) - it has all the hallmarks of an effort to buy her silence. Who does she think she's kidding about how the costs for 4,000 hackings were covered?

Doesn't it just make you wonder how many of the sites you link to are indirectly funded by the CIA? Think about it. How much advertising revenue do you think is really derived by most of these sites? point at which more safety infringes on our personal rights and we say
the remaining risk is acceptable. We could increase traffic safety by
taking away personal vehicles and making everyone take public transit.
We could increase safety from contagious disease by only letting people
leave their homes for a valid reason and making people wear masks in
public. But at some point we recognize the absurdity and stupidity of
demanding further safety; at some point the risk must be accepted in the
name of personal freedom and common sense. How come the government
doesn’t see that we passed that point in this area? I don’t want 100%
safety at the price, in terms of the personal freedoms, that we are
having to give up to get it. Even more so given that it’s just the

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One
hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme
Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are
directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the
domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem
was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its
Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally
chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason.
They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a
congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't
care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The
politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the
lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine
how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that
what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con
regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human
being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have
the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for
creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot
force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole
responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and
approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House?
John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow
House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If
the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree
to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace
545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence
and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is
not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the
plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal
government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to
exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement
plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do
not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire
and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice
they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate
and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con
you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like
"the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing
what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

face prosecution in the US and Britain in the wake of the News of the World
phone hacking scandal.
Rupert Murdoch's embattled son could face criminal charges after he
acknowledged approving out of court settlements to hacking victims and
admitted misleading parliament, although he insisted he did not do so
deliberately.
Allegations that News of the World journalists also made payments to police
officers could also leave Mr Murdoch exposed to prosecution in the US, where
Mr Murdoch is listed as deputy chief operating officer of his father Rupert
Murdoch’s News Corp, the parent company of paper publishers News
International.
Under American law, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) makes it a crime
for American companies to offer corrupt payments to foreign government
officials.
If the allegations of payments to police officers are proven, Mr Murdoch could
face an American prosecution in his role as deputy chief operating officer

ReplyDelete1. US Jurisdiction. Since News Corp. stock is traded in the US, US authorites have jurisdiction to investigate allegations.2. Quid pro quo. The FCPA applies if the payments to
government officials are used in ‘obtaining or retaining’ business.
Koehler thinks that this part of FCPA applies since the £100,000+ was
allegedly used for information that helped sell more copies of News of the World.
There is good news and bad news for James Murdoch. The good news is
that if the US goes after this case under FCPA, it would be more likely
to make News Corp. the plaintiff, rather than James Murdoch. However, if
evidence surfaces that connects him to the payments directly, then he
could be on the hook.
Since News Corp. has allegedly been involved in destroying documents
related to the case, it may be difficult to find that evidence against
Murdoch. After all, as Gaurdian.co.uk reported,
police are investigating whether NI obstructed justice by deleting
“millions of emails from an internal archive in an apparent attempt to
obstruct Scotland Yard’s inquiry” into the scandal.
If Murdoch were to be named a plaintiff and he lost, the penalty
could be severe. Back in 2009, movie producer Gerald Green and his wife,
Patricia went to jail for six months after being convicted under FCPA
for paying a Thai government official $1. 8 million in exchange for
contracts to manage the Bangkok international film festival, according
to Gaurdian.co.uk.
Tom Fox, a Houston attorney Gaurdian.co.uk interviewed,
pointed out that the Greens were also subject to a much harsher penalty —
forfeiture of assets. As Fox said, “The Greens lost everything. Their
house, savings, retirement plan. They are destitute now.”
While it’s hard to imagine James Murdoch destitute, it is easy to see
the arid desert where moral judgment ought to reside in News Corp.’s

Famously, at a critical stage in war on terror, when international
pressure on the United States was exceptionally high following a 2004
raid that was thought to have killed a key player in Al Qaeda,
then–Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice took an extended break from her
duties to participate in a private satellite briefing for Murdoch’s editors from around the world.
The ties between the Bush administration and the Murdoch empire ran deep. It was a Fox News “call” on election night 2000 that declared Bush the “winner” of Florida and the presidency—a
“call” that was not based on actual numbers but on the hunch of Fox’s
analyst, who happened to be Bush’s cousin. The relationship deepened as
the United States steered toward war with Iraq: a project Murdoch
passionately favored.
When the war in Iraq began, the three international leaders who were
most ardently committed to the project were US President Bush, British
Prime Minister Tony Blair and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
On paper, they seemed like three very different political players: Bush
was a bumbling and inexperienced son of a former president who mixed
unwarranted bravado with born-again moralizing to hold together an
increasingly conservative Republican Party; Blair was the urbane
“modernizer” who had transformed a once proudly socialist party into the
centrist “New Labour” project; Howard was the veteran political fixer
who came up through the ranks of a coalition that mingled traditional
conservatives and swashbuckling corporatists.
But they had one thing in common. They were all favorites of Rupert
Murdoch and his sprawling media empire, which began in Australia,
extended to the “mother country” of Britain and finally conquered the
United States. Murdoch’s media outlets had helped all three secure
electoral victories. And the Murduch empire gave the Bush-Blair-Howard troika courage and coverage
as preparations were made for the Iraq invasion. Murdoch-owned media
outlets in the United States, Britain and Australia enthusiastically
cheered on the rush to war and the news that it was a “Mission
Accomplished.”
Now, Bush, Blair and Howard are all out of office, and all in relative states of disgrace.
No problem for Murdoch. Politicians come and go, but his empire’s political influence has been a constant —until, perhaps, now.

at the Department of Justice. He said of the investigation this week: "I
think my whole life's experience will bear on this."
Law professor Viet Dinh played a central role in 2001 in drafting the Patriot
Act, the US government's legal response to the September 11 terrorist
attacks that saw surveillance powers increase dramatically.
Mr Dinh, who was born in Vietnam, teaches at Washington's Georgetown
University and has sat on News Corp's board since 2004.

It would be surprising, except for the recent history of Fox News Watch. In the last couple of years, Fox News Watch has ignored Fox News Washington managing editor Bill Sammon's admission that
he linked President Obama to socialism even though he "privately"
believed the link to be "far-fetched" at the time, ignored the fact that
Sammon sent an e-mail directing
Fox reporters to skew reporting on climate change, ignored the fact
that Fox pulled the plug on Sean Hannity's decision to charge admission for
a taping of his show and direct all proceeds to the Cincinnati tea
party, kept silent about Fox Business' host Andrew Napolitano's 9-11 conspiracy theories, and ignored donations made by News Corp. to Republican-aligned groups.

similar post simply out of frustration with FB friends that continue to

He let's Mossad off the hook for direct involvement. Think of this logically...if Mossad truly had foreknowledge and warned the US Government of a pending attack which they (Mossad) were truly not involved in, we'd have been and would still be reading in the MSM about how on top of things Israeli intelligence was, and how they warned the US government. They'd be so busy taking credit for forewarning the US - you would have read those stories everywhere. It didn't happen. This fact, combined with actual arrests of Mossad Agents with not only explosives expertise, but actual explosives, on 9/11, in Manhattan, puts the lie to Ruppert's claim that Israel was not directly involved.

actually collected $4.8 billion in income tax refunds, all or
nearly all from the U.S. government.
The relevant figure is the cash paid tax rate. This is the
net amount of corporate income taxes actually paid after
refunds. For those four years, it was minus 46 percent,
disclosure statements show.
Even on an accounting basis, which measures taxes incurred
but often not actually paid for years, News Corp. had a tax
rate of under 20 percent, little more than half the 35 percent
statutory rate, company disclosures examined by Reuters show.
News Corp. had no comment.
Fox News, the editorial pages of his Wall Street Journal
and other Murdoch outlets often rail against taxes. Their
attacks on government benefits for the elderly, the sick, the
jobless and children focus attention on the uses of tax dollars
and away from his aggressive efforts to enjoy the benefits of
civilization without paying for them.
Many other companies may follow similar practices but most
of corporate America doesn't own one of the country's most
powerful newspaper editorial pages.
