NEW ORLEANS — BP reported some progress yesterday in its efforts to stem oil leaks from an undersea well off the Louisiana coast that have created what President Obama called a “potentially unprecedented environmental disaster.’’
Bill Salvin, a company spokesman, said that crews had finished building a containment dome, a 4-story, 70-ton structure that the company plans to lower into place over one of the three leaks to catch the escaping oil and allow it to be pumped to the surface.
Two more domes would be completed today, Salvin said, and crews hoped to install all three domes by the weekend.
“That will essentially eliminate most of the issues you have with oil in the water,’’ he said.

The CEO of British Petrol came up with this idea,.. last weekend his wife and a group of friends got together at his private island in the Caribbean and had 20 bottles of Rothschild's select champagne only for the very elite - that costs over $20,000.00 per bottle - at his exclusive estate. He found a few of these in the game room on the floor and wondered if these could not be used to plug the oil leak from that sunken oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He is willing to donate them to the cause - without any costs - but was hoping this sacrifice and donation could be reflected in his next executive bonus and quarterly stock options.

BP CEO says dome to be on seabed Thurs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - BP's chief executive says that a containment dome designed to cover the Gulf oil leak will be on the seabed Thursday, and will be hooked up to a drill ship over the weekend.
CEO Tony Hayward told reporters Tuesday that if all goes according to plan, the principal leak could be contained by early next week. But he stressed that this procedure has never been done before at a depth of 5,000 feet, saying "there's no guarantees."
The plan is to cover the leak in the structure known as a cofferdam, and funnel the oil to the surface.
Hayward also said that chemical dispersant being used on the oil have "significantly" reduced the amount of oil coming to the surface.

The measure went down in defeat because:
If the jail were closed, petty criminals and misdemeanors would just be ticketed and released as in other districts without city jails.
They actually want to spend money to house petty criminals!
