Big Dan's Big News June 6, 2010

Special Commentary by Big Dan: "I thought of the term: the 'Reckless Drillers'. It can be used for BOTH oil drillers AND Marcellus Shale drillers who are putting profits ahead of safety. If anyone uses this term, I have copyright on it, I want royalties!!!! I also hedged my bet, and came up with the term 'Reckless Landowners'. Reckless Drillers and politicians can use THAT term to describe the landowners whose land they're wrecking, to make it seem like the reckless drillers are really the victims...kind of like when Bush called Americans losing their homes to foreclosure 'Reckless Homeowners'..."

Special Commentary II by Big Dan: "I'm thinking 'Reckless Humanitarians' for the flotilla aid humanitarians that were executed by the Israelis...whaddya tink???"

Shot in the back and the back of the head by Israeli commandos: American youth Furkan Dogan (it's "OK", though, because Israel did it...maybe NOW you will listen to me about how the U.S. media and the U.S. government is so blatantly pro-Israeli biased, that they can even MURDER U.S. citizens and NOTHING will happen to them, the "news" will cover it up, and our U.S. government will back them killing OUR own citizens!!! We're supposed to be beholden to the foreign country Israel, even though we're not Israeli...because the U.S. media and the U.S. government...BOTH parties, tell us so!!!)

You want to know why we need independent journalism, and why those of you who are reading this article need to support the publication in which it is appearing? Because if you rely for your news on the US corporate media, whether ad-supported or underwriter-supported, you won’t learn that Furkan Dogan, the 19-year-old American citizen slain by Israeli commandos in the raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla May 31, was shot in the back and in the back of the head, as well as multiple times in the face.

This is the conclusion of the autopsy conducted by the Turkish Council of Forensic Medicine, which also did autopsies on the eight other Turkish citizens killed in the Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara ferry and five other smaller boats in the so-called Freedom Flotilla. Of the other eight dead, the medical examiners found that five had been shot in the back, or in the back of the head.

This critically important information has not appeared in US news reports. Some American news organizations have left out the autopsy information entirely from their reports as of Saturday. CNN, in its report on Friday, did note that five of the nine were shot in the head, and at close range, but the all-important fact that most of the victims were shot from behind was left out. ABC had the same information on Thursday, again without mentioning the shots from behind. In its article on Friday, the NY Times had yet to even name Dogan, the American victim, much less mention the bullets that hit him or how he was shot.

And yet, if you’re trying to establish what happened on that ship, the direction of the firing, not just the number of bullets, or the distance from which they were fired, is crucial.

  5. Back in Louisiana on May 23rd (From Mother Jones Reporters on Grand Isle):

The next day, cops drive up and down Grand Isle beach explicitly telling tourists it is still open, just stay out of the water. There are pools of oil on the beach; dolphins crest just offshore. A fifty-something couple, Southern Louisianians, tell me this kind of thing happened all the time when they were kids; they swam in rubber suits when it got bad, and it was no big deal. They just hope this doesn't mean we'll stop drilling.
    ==============

And there are plenty of folks gnashing their teeth about lifting the deep water drilling moratorium immediately so that the money can keep flowing in...even as the oil from BP DWH keeps flowing in...people who are unwilling to suffer any hardship for 6 months so that government and industry can analyze what happened and devise better policies and procedures to lessen the likelihood of this magnitude of incident from happening again.

Plenty of Steel and Auto industry workers lost their jobs to Globalization/outsourcing for good...not just for a 6-month moratorium...folks who are laid off from the DW oil industry need to be glad that we desperately need the oil and that their livelihoods will be only interrupted for 6 months...their jobs are not permanently expendable, like millions of jobs sacrificed on the altar of 'the China price' and the almighty profit margin.

Allen Has Ordered 'Uninhibited Access' to Oil Spill Operations

    June 06, 2010 10:15 AM

Admiral Thad Allen told me he has ordered that oil spill operations be open to the media. The National Incident Commander for the oil spill efforts said in my “This Week” interview, “I put out a written directive and I can provide it for the record that says the media will have uninhibited access anywhere we're doing operations, except for two things, if it's a security or safety problem. That is my policy. I'm the national incident commander.”

When I was in Louisiana over the weekend, I experienced stony silence from government workers and private contractors working for BP who were told not to talk about the work they are doing. Allen pledged to make sure word about his directive gets out to workers.

TAPPER: Lastly, I saw firsthand when I was down in Louisiana over
the weekend, all the workers there, whether they work for the governor
or for BP or for private contractors who work for BP, they've all been
told not to talk to the press, not to talk to the public about their
work. Shouldn't they be allowed to share with the public the work that
    they're doing?

ALLEN: I put out a written directive and I can provide it for the
record that says the media will have uninhibited access anywhere we're
doing operations, except for two things, if it's a security or safety
problem. That is my policy. I'm the national incident commander.

TAPPER: Well, I can tell you firsthand people are not -- people are
    not following that.

ALLEN: You take (ph) the information and you tell me where it's at,
and we'll get the word to them.

TAPPER: All right, Admiral Allen, thanks so much for joining us.

  18. Admiral Thad) Allen Explains Why Oil-Sucking Tankers Aren’t Being Used

    Source: ABC News

After a 1993 oil spill in the Persian Gulf, empty oil tankers were used to reclaim oil from the water’s surface. In my “This Week” interview, I asked Admiral Thad Allen why those techniques are not being used in the Gulf of Mexico, and he explained:

“We’ve actually talked to those folks. There are a couple of issues with that. Number one, the tankers actually have to be modified. They are not ready to go right now. Number two, we don’t know what those modifications will do to the stability of the vessels and how they operate and number thee, the area of operations is very, very different. We’ve got anywhere from 20 to 30 vessels within one square mile over the top of that well at any particular time, managing remotely operating vehicles, doing the drilling of the relief well and so forth, so I’m not sure it’s the right application of that right now.”

    ================================================================
Actually the real reason skimmers are not being used,.. because British Petroleum has done an extensive cost analysis. The use of dispersants are a far cheaper way for them to go - dispersants are far less labor intensive, and Fascist Capitalists abhor mounting labor costs. They would rather the money to resolve the issue oil cleanup go to the big chemical industry - owned and controlled by the super rich and the boys on Wall Street. For every dollar the robber barons can deny labor - then gain an additional ten dollars in more power over the blue collar workforce. And besides why cleanup the oil ? Just squirt dispersants on it and conceal it below the surface of the water. People are so stupid. If they can't see the oil - then they think there is no problem. Once they find the below water oil plumes,.. it is too late,.. because then you can blame the oil plumes on natural oil leakage from seismic activity on the ocean floor.

    ===========================================================

The top bullshit explanation by Thad Allen of why skimmers are not being used by BP was given during an ABC News interview.

  24. For NYT, Killing Civilians Shows How Much You Don't Want To

The media template for writing about Afghan civilian casualties requires that articles include some reference to the extreme care taken by U.S/NATO forces to avoid killing non-combatants. The practice reached a new low in this New York Times story (5/29/10) about a U.S. drone attack that killed 23 civilians:

The attack, in which three vehicles were destroyed, illustrated the extraordinary sensitivity to the inadvertent killing of noncombatants by NATO forces. Since taking command here last June, General McChrystal has made protection of civilians a high priority, and has sharply restricted airstrikes.

The attack on civilians illustrated the sensitivity to the killing of civilians. What?

Given that the report explains that the intelligence gathering was inadequate--including the fact that evidence about the presence of civilians went unheeded--doesn't this actually show that there isn't enough sensitivity around the killing of innocents?

  28. WASHINGTON — The Coast Guard commander in charge of the federal response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico warned on Sunday that even if the flow of crude was stopped by summer, it could take well into autumn — and maybe much longer— to deal with the slick spreading relentlessly across the gulf.

The assessment came as the sheer volume of oil gushing from the out-of-control well forced BP to temporarily halt its attempts to capture more oil by closing all four vents on a capping device, said a technician working on the operation. Even with three vents still open, the cap is capturing so much oil — now more than 10,000 barrels a day — that the company does not have adequate equipment at hand to process it all.

Well, I guess we can't blame them. They thought they would only have to process 5,000 barrels a day!

  30. ~snip~
Even if BP can substantially increase the percentage of oil gushing out of the BOP, the cap is not even intended to plug all of leaks. You will see when the underwater cameras occasionally pan around that there are other leaks which aren't even being addressed (indeed, there may be a leak 1,000 feet below the sea floor, and there is a rumor of an even bigger leak 5 to 7 miles away). There is no word yet on whether or not BP will attempt other fixes on other leak areas.

Moreover, as noted by The Oil Drum:

The ship doing the processing [of oil collected from the LMRP cap] is set up to handle 15,000 barrels of oil a day, so that is the upper limit on the amount the system is set up to handle.

However, as I pointed out on May 19th - despite BP and the government's attempt to cover up the severity of the spill (Obama was apparently briefed in April how gigantic a problem, and how hard to stop it) - much more than 15,000 barrels a day are being released:

The Gulf oil spill is much worse than originally believed.

As the Christian Science Monitor writes:

It's now likely that the actual amount of the oil spill dwarfs the Coast Guard's figure of 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons, a day.

Independent scientists estimate that the renegade wellhead at the bottom of the Gulf could be spewing up to 25,000 barrels a day. If chokeholds on the riser pipe break down further, up to 50,000 barrels a day could be released, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration memo obtained by the Mobile, Ala., Press-Register.

CNN quotes the lead government official responding to the spill - the commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen - as stating:

If we lost a total well head, it could be 100,000 barrels or more a day.

Indeed, an environmental document filed by the company running the oil drilling rig - BP - estimates the maximum as 162,000 barrels a day:

In an exploration plan and environmental impact analysis filed with the federal government in February 2009, BP said it had the capability to handle a “worst-case scenario” at the Deepwater Horizon site, which the document described as a leak of 162,000 barrels per day from an uncontrolled blowout — 6.8 million gallons each day.

Today, a Purdue University mechanical engineering professor - Steven Wereley - testified to the House Committee on Commerce and Energy that 95,000 barrels a day are currently leaking into the Gulf. That's 3,990,000 gallons - just shy of 4 million gallons - per day.

In other words, BP is apparently only planning to recover a small fraction of the oil gushing out of the broken BOP. Obviously, BP could bring in a processing ship with a higher capacity if it can increase the recovery rate. I hope it is possible.

For background on the Gulf oil disaster, see this.

6 bodies found in cave, 3 with hearts cut out
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    June 7, 2010, 12:48AM

CANCUN, Mexico — Police discovered six dead bodies in a cavern near the tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, three of them cut open and their hearts removed.

Authorities are investigating the identities of the four men and two women found dead in the natural cave, said Francisco Alor, the Quintana Roo state attorney general.

“They were apparently tortured and their chests were opened to remove the hearts,” Alor's office said later in a statement.

Three of the bodies had the letter “Z” carved on their abdomens — a possible reference to the Zeta drug gang, though officials did not make an explicit connection to cartel violence that has plagued many parts of Mexico.

More than 22,700 people have died nationwide in drug violence since late 2006, when President Felipe Calderon sent soldiers and federal police to battle the cartels.
