Amid calls to boycott
the company over the anti-marriage equality remarks, The Jim Henson
Company, which created toys for Chick-fil-A, spoke out against the
restaurant, writing
on Facebook: "[W]e have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to
partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is
personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to
donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD." Chick-fil-A
then announced it had pulled the Henson toys, citing safety concerns.
Following the split with The Jim Henson Company, Chick-fil-A replaced the toys with the children's books The Berenstain Bears. As reported
by NBC News, a statement on the Berenstain company website "said the
books' publisher, HarperCollins, has been working on this marketing
project for more than a year."
While all this has been going on, Fox has been defending Chick-fil-A while not disclosing that it has an interest in doing so. Both Fox and HarperCollins, the publisher of the Berenstain Bears
books, are subsidiaries of News Corporation. If the HarperCollins
marketing project suffers as a result of a decline in sales brought
about by the Chick-fil-A controversy, News Corp. stands to take a hit to
its bottom line.
Last week, on the July 26 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, Fox contributor Laura Ingraham defended
Chick-fil-A by falsely claiming that "the majority of Americans" oppose
same-sex marriage. Neither Ingraham nor O'Reilly mentioned Fox's
interest in defending Chick-fil-A.
On Fox News' On the Record yesterday, Fox contributor Sarah Palin said
that calling for a Chick-fil-A boycott "has a chilling effect on our
first amendment rights." Neither Palin nor host Greta Van Susteren
disclosed Fox's interest in defending the restaurant.
Today, Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson suggested
that opponents of Chick-fil-A's anti-marriage equality stance have
"taken it a step too far," adding: "Just because the CEO said that he's
in favor of traditional marriage doesn't mean that there's been any
discrimination going on at any Chick-fil-As." Again, Fox's interest in
defending Chick-fil-A was not mentioned.

The Justice Department has launched an investigation into whether Las
Vegas Sands Corporation and several of its executives violated
money-laundering laws, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing unnamed lawyers and other people involved in the matter, the

Its investigators want to find out how the casino handled money
received several years ago from a Mexican businessman later accused of

ReplyDeleteAccording to police, a 911 dispatcher received multiple calls from the temple at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time. An officer who responded to the scene engaged with the suspected gunman in the parking lot. The veteran officer was shot multiple times and is in surgery at Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, according to Greenfield (Wis.) Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt. His condition is not known.
The suspect was "put down" and is presumed dead, Wentlandt said.
Tactical units conducting a sweep of the 17,000-square-foot temple discovered four bodies inside and three—including the gunman—in the parking lot. There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though the police spokesman would not confirm those reports. "We have not identified additional shooters," Wentlandt said.
A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said a total of three victims were admitted in critical condition—two with gunshot wounds to the face and one with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Other area hospitals were told to prepare for as many as 20 victims.
Dozens of worshipers, including women and children, were gathering for a meal before an 11:30 a.m. service when the shooting occurred. There are about 500 members of congregation, officials say. Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheist faith with about 27 million followers worldwide, and 500,000 in the United States.
According to local news reports, police and law enforcement officials are now interviewing worshipers in the basement of the temple.
In a statement, Wis. Gov. Scott Walker said his office is working with the FBI and local law enforcement in its investigation. According to ABC News, federal agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms bureau were sent to the scene of the shooting.
"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," Walker said. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."
The Indian Embassy in Washington called it a "tragic incident," and said it has been in touch with the National Security Council and local authorities to monitor the situation.
Sunday's shooting comes less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, when 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."
Since 9/11, Sikh rights groups in the United States have reported a rise in bias attacks. There have been more than 700 incidents since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

ReplyDeleteMy how things have changed! I grew up in Brookfield during the 50's and 60's. The place was as pure white as white could be. Milwaukee Braves third baseman and home run champion lived near my parents house. When he went to sell the house to Hank Aaron the community would have nothing to do with it and blocked the sale because Hank was black. Now they have a Sikh Temple.
There are many Sikhs around me here in Sacramento - a local mini-mart I go to a few blocks from my house is owned by some. It is amazing how ignorant people can be - when 9/11 happened they were victim to all kinds of crap from idiots who though they had something to do with it.

A source told The Post the shooter had a military background. ABC News reported he was a white supremacist or skinhead.
As
the hate-filled madman made his way through the temple, terrified
congregants hid in closets, trying to text for help. Others were able to
run to safety outside.
Shortly after cops arrived, a
20-year-veteran officer was aiding a victim when the gunman shot him
several times. A second cop then got into a shootout with the suspect
and killed him.
“They stopped this from being worse than it could have been,” Edwards said.
The wounded cop was expected to survive.
Tactical units stormed the temple, found four people dead inside and three outside, including the suspected shooter.

Boba Ri, one of the temple members, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
the killer was “not an insider” and called the attack “a hate crime.”
The gunman, he said, walked up and shot a priest who was standing outside, then went inside and opened fire.
“He did not speak, he just began shooting,” said Harpreet Singh, recounting what he was told by his aunt.
Kanwarpdeep Singh Kaleka, a member of the temple, said the madman had a
9/11 tattoo on one of his arms. He also told CNN that the shooter
seemed to be targeting men wearing turbans, including his uncle, who was
wounded.
“Everyone of all faiths are allowed in the temple,” Kaleka said. “It’s unfortunate that someone took advantage of this.”
Two semiautomatic handguns believed used by the shooter were recovered at the scene, a law-enforcement source told CNN.

Nov.1 and December 28, a stunning 64,832 applications for permits were
received. And now we have today’s shooting, which will surely motivate
some legislators to rethink the recent law and come out in favor of more
control.
