David Brock, the reformed conservative noise-maker, on how the Right has sabotaged journalism, democracy, and truth.As a young journalist in the 1990s, David Brock was a key cog the Republican noise machine. Writing for the American Spectator, a conservative magazine funded by billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, Brock gained fame for his attack pieces on Anita Hill and President Bill Clinton. Then, in 2002, Brock came clean. In his memoir, Blinded by the Right, Brock admitted that his work was based on lies and distortion, and part of a coordinated smear campaign funded by wealthy right wing groups to discredit Clinton and confuse the public.
Since then, Brock has continued to expose the conservative media onslaught. In his newest book, The Republican Noise Machine, Brock documents how right-wing groups pressure the media and spread misinformation to the public. It's easy to see how this is done.
Fringe conspiracies and stories will be kept alive by outlets like Rush Limbaugh, the Washington Times, and the Drudge Report, until they finally break into the mainstream media.
Media groups like Brent Bozell's Media Research Center have spent 30 years convincing the public that the media is, in fact, liberal. As Brock says, it's all a sham: "I have seen, and I know firsthand, indeed from my own pen, how the organized Right has sabotaged not only journalism but also democracy and truth."

I'm telling you (you plural), I know really smart people on the left that I regard bash Rachel Maddow, but look at that clip I posted. You STILL find hard hitting journalism with those guys Rachel/Ed/Ratigan/Keith that is NOWHERE in the mainstream. YES...they are somewhat controlled. But like you said, plunger, they're getting heat and that says something good about them. Don't forget Olbermann during the Bush years, the lone voice on mainstream TV taking Bush to task. Sure, it's not "perfect" what you want, but what if it wasn't there?

What if you called a talk radio show and said: "On your channel, your news briefs just said 'the tea party says no more government spending'. WHO is the 'tea party'?"

Funny how it is the Port Authority who re-took control of Stewart Airport, AFTER it had been privatized - acquired by Ronald Lauder for use as the primary drone launch operations base on 9/11.

The World Trade Center was born of Camelot, the John Kennedy era of irrepressible optimism. In 1961, the same year the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recommended building a world trade center, Kennedy declared his intention to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade. In an editorial the year before, the New York Times had made its position on the World Trade Center clear:

The one who was "thinking large" was David Rockefeller. The grandson of John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil and America's first billionaire, David Rockefeller hoped to revitalize Lower Manhattan. This area, the oldest part of town, had not seen the same post-war growth as had mid-town—growth that Rockefeller Center had triggered when it rose in the 1930s.
David Rockefeller's first effort in this area was the 60-story Chase Manhattan Bank Tower, completed in the financial district in 1961. (He was chairman of the bank at the time.) Even earlier, in the late 1950s, he had begun pushing hard for a world trade center. With the support of his brother Nelson, then governor of New York, he had the Port Authority evaluate plans for such a center. The Port Authority, a bistate agency responsible for ports, airports, and the like lying within 25 miles of the Statue of Liberty, determined it was feasible, and the project was underway.

The goal was to revitalize lower Manhattan, which had been losing financial firms to outlying areas, by building a new office complex that, it was hoped, would attract new tenants involved in international trade. Moreover, half of its commissioners were appointed by David Rockefeller's brother.
