Big Dan's Big News June 7, 2010

Israeli Protest at Ashdod for Freedom Flotilla Aid for Gaza

Turkey defends it's citizens when they're murdered by Israelis, the United States of Israel does nothing when Israelis murder U.S. citizens:

Glenn Greenwald: One of the primary reasons the Turkish Government has been so angry in its denunciations of the Israeli attack on the flotilla is because many of the dead were Turkish citizens. That's what governments typically do: object vociferously when their citizens are killed by foreign nations under extremely questionable circumstances. Needless to say, that principle -- as all principles are -- will be completely discarded when it comes to the U.S. protection of Israel:

A U.S. citizen of Turkish origin was among the nine people killed when Israeli commandos attacked a Gaza-bound aid flotilla . . . An official from the Turkish Islamic charity that spearheaded the campaign to bust the blockade on Gaza identified the U.S. citizen as 19-year-old Furkan Dogan . . . . Dogan, who held a U.S. passport, had four bullet wounds to the head and one to the chest . . . .

Will the fact that one of the dead at Israel's hands was an American teenager with four bullet wounds to his head alter the Obama administration's full-scale defense of Israel? Does that question even need to be asked? Not even American interests can undermine reflexive U.S. support for anything Israel does; even the Chief of the Mossad acknowledged this week that "Israel is progressively becoming a burden on the United States." One dead 19-year-old American with 4 bullet holes in his head (especially one of Turkish origin with a Turkish-sounding name) surely won't have any impact.

  1. BP knows the flow rate of the oil

To determine the flow rate of the oil, you need to know three things:

    (1) The velocity of the material coming out of the BOP

    (2) The ratio of gas to oil

    (3) The diameter of the exit orifice

BP very likely measured (1) when the riser was removed, creating a single leak atop the BOP, where a flow sensor could have been positioned. The gas/oil ratio (2) has been determined on the surface by the flaring and oil capture processing operation. The BOP pipe diameter (3) has been known from the start.

Thus one can conclude that BP is suppressing accurate information about the magnitude of oil leakage into the GOM in order to protect its profitability and institutional survival. This behavior is contrary to the public interest, and the refusal of the Obama administration to demand this information confirms that corporations dominate our society, both on Wall Street and in the energy sector.

  9. Israel Rejects Call for International Probe into Attack on Gaza Flotilla

While international condemnation of Israel continues, inside Israel the mood is quite different. An Israeli parliamentary panel recommended today that the Knesset revoke the privileges of Israeli Arab lawmaker Hanin Zoabi for participating in last week’s Gaza-bound aid flotilla. Right-wing demonstrators targeted a peace protest in Tel Aviv Saturday and reportedly attacked veteran Israeli activist, the eighty-six-year-old Uri Avnery. For more on the fallout of the flotilla attack and the reactions inside Israel, I’m joined now from Jaffa by Max Blumenthal.

  22. The most important information has been suppressed

BP now has controlled apertures on the top hat to which it can affix instrumentation and/or capture mechanisms. Please tell me why flow rate cannot be measured at these apertures or at the end of piping attached to them. The oil/gas ratio will be the same at all of these tap points, and it is already being monitored at the surface, so the only value that needs to be measured is the velocity of the flow, and this can be crudely established by timing the filling of a large bladder or tank attached to one of the top cap outlets.

Every other comment on TOD concerns estimating the flow. There is ample theoretical and technical capability for measuring the flow. Yet there is no reliable measurement of the flow of this disastrous leak. The absence of this measurement is a calculated decision to protect political and financial interests, not a failure of technology.

Pilly Enquirer: Gas spews from N.W. Pa. well rupture

from Friday ( & nothing since):

Gas spews from N.W. Pa. well rupture

    By Amy Worden
    Inquirer Harrisburg Bureau
HARRISBURG - Natural gas and polluted wastewater blasted out of a well in Northwestern Pennsylvania for 16 hours before being contained Friday in what officials say was the state's most alarming drilling-related accident in recent years.
No injuries were reported and no fire broke out, a grave risk with large amounts of airborne natural gas.

The well ruptured at 8 p.m. Thursday, sending a gas plume 75 feet into the air and wastewater cascading into the ground just as the gas contractor was preparing to begin production at the well, the officials said.

The accident happened as EOG Resources Inc. of Houston was preparing to start production at a deep well in the Marcellus Shale, the rich gas reserve underlying most of the state. The site is on private land at the edge of the Moshannon State Forest. The nearest house is more than a mile away.

State officials said they were still trying to determine exactly what happened, but said unexpectedly high gas pressure caused drilling crews to lose control of the well. They also said a safety device known as a blowout preventer had failed.

Workers at the site were evacuated, and contaminated wastewater, a by-product of the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, process used to extract underground gas, was eventually contained, according to Department of Environment Protection officials.

  28. 7 hurt in W.Va. gas well explosion

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. -- Seven people were injured early today in an explosion at a two-day-old gas well that had recently started drilling to the deep Marcellus shale formation in rural West Virginia.

Thomas Hart, director of emergency services for Marshall County, said crews from 20 fire departments are on the scene in a remote area outside Moundsville as flames continue to shoot 50 feet into the air. Fire crews are keeping the flames from spreading to equipment on the drilling site, but they are waiting for experts to be sent from well owner Dallas-based Chief Oil & Gas of Wexford, Pa., for help with extinguishing the fire. The rigging was extensively damaged.

Ms. Gittins said the well, the second to be drilled on that pad, was still "flaring," or burning, gas at noon, "which is what you want to happen." She said she didn't know how long the well flaring would continue.

The West Virginia explosion is the second major accident at a Marcellus shale drilling operation in four days. On Friday, natural gas and drilling fluids escaped from a Marcellus shale well operated by EOG Resources in Lawrence Township, Clearfield County, Pa., for 16 hours, threatening to pollute a nearby stream.

The vegan establishment was deluged with customers in the two days after news came out last week that one of the co-owners had served coffee to a Portland police officer, then kicked him out.

"We had a couple of really busy days over the weekend," said John Langley, the co-owner who served Officer James Crooker and asked him to leave. "We had two $1,100 days, which is maybe double a typical day."

The story sparked a fiery response, with national coverage and about 600 comments posted on oregonlive.com. Along with a boost in customers, the cafe has received five threats of arson and other violence.

Polymer-based Filter Successfully Cleans Water, Recovers Oil...

Pitt Researcher Says Simple Polymer-based Filter Successfully Cleans Water, Recovers Oil in Gulf of Mexico Tests

Developed by Pitt engineering professor Di Gao in response to the “Deepwater Horizon” oil leak, the technique combines an ordinary cotton filter with a solution that repels oil while allowing water to pass through

PITTSBURGH-In response to the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, a University of Pittsburgh engineering professor has developed a technique for separating oil from water via a cotton filter coated in a chemical polymer that blocks oil while allowing water to pass through. The researcher reports that the filter was successfully tested off the coast of Louisiana and shown to simultaneously clean water and preserve the oil.

    ...
A video of Gao testing his filter with oil and water samples from the Gulf of Mexico spill is available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfRKjiOXVWE

Gao's filter hinges on a polymer that is both hydrophilic-it bonds with the hydrogen molecules in water-and oleophobic, meaning that it repels oil. When the polymer is applied to an ordinary cotton filter, it allows water to pass through but not oil. The filter is produced by submerging the cotton in a liquid solution containing the polymer then drying it in an oven or in open air, Gao explained.
