Big Dan's Big News March 27, 2010

Special Commentary by Big Dan: "Here's my 'hat tip' policy: if I steal something from you, I'm not going to 'hat tip' you unless you point out that you think I stole it from you and I did in fact steal it from you. Then I'll 'hat tip' you. If you point it out the next day, or if I don't acknowledge within one day, YOU LOSE!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!! But here's a hat tip to everyone I've stolen things off of: thank you, one and all!!!"

Q: Why would U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan go out of their way to smear a journalist?

A: Because he told the truth about a night raid that killed Afghan civilians, including pregnant women.

We spoke with Afghanistan-based journalist Jerome Starkey about his reporting on special forces raids that killed civilians and NATOs surprising--and disappointing--response. This video contains disturbing images, and an even more disturbing story of violence, and an attempt to silence a truth-teller. It shows why its absolutely essential that we keep pushing back against the Pentagons message machine.

SARAH PALIN & THE TINY TEA PARTY MEDIA DARLINGS:

This should get 24x7 LIVE coverage on all the networks: Sarah Palin will lead the Tea Party Express into Harry Reid's hometown. 10,000 are expected, and if THREE networks covered Sarah Palin LIVE in February when 600 people were there, imagine the network coverage for 10,000!!! NOW...if there's a liberal protest of OVER 200,000 like this past Sunday, THAT will receive ZERO coverage from the networks. BUT IMAGINE THE COVERAGE OF 10,000 WITH SARAH PALIN!!! Christ! 10,000 Tea Partiers would be like 10 MILLION anti-war protesters!!! But they wouldn't be covered, either. The Tea Partiers and Sarah Palin even get ADVANCE NOTICE in the media of UPCOMING protests, let alone ZERO COVERAGE!!! Did you have any advance notice in the media before March 21: "IMMIGRATION REFORM PROTEST COMING UP SUNDAY MARCH 21"? Of course not!

ABOVE: Sarah Palin, the much larger anti-war protest, and the much larger immigration protest - BOTH of which were IGNORED by the media in favor of SARAH AND THE TINY TEA PARTIERS, who never met a WAR they didn't like!!!

Tea party thousands rally in Reid’s tiny town. Palin headlines Nevada event in Democratic Senate leader's hometown

Media virtually IGNORED over 200,000 at Sunday March 21 Immigration Protest.

And the day before that, March 20 Saturday, there was an even BIGGER protest that was not only in Washington DC, but was in major cities across the U.S. and worldwide including Germany that received virtually ZERO media coverage. Here's some clips from the NATIONWIDE/WORLDWIDE anti-war protest last Saturday March 20, that the corporate owned media they want us to think is "liberal" IGNORED:

As bad as Saddam Hussein was (and he was a megalomanic monster), what followed him was a staggering catastrophe for Iraq, even if Americans no longer care to give it much thought.

When Was the Last Time You Visited Iraq? Exporting American Democracy to the World

White House Press Corps longest-serving member says Obama lost credibility when he dodged her question on Israeli nukes. Helen Thomas says Obama dodged her question about Israel nukes and is one-sided in favoring Israel. She says the Palestinians have no voice.

Zionist Organization of America: Obama’s Israel stance ‘an insult’ to all Jews

The Obama administration was able to present the struggle as one between healthcare “reformers” and far-right wackos looking to wreck his presidency. All this was done in the service of protecting the insurance companies from the serious critique offered by single-payer.

This guy makes more sense than any politician I've seen:

Punk-rock meets politics: American system is powerless

What happenned to America, the land of the free? Well some think it's been bought by mega corporations. The frontman of the left-leaning band 'Strike Anywhere', who describes himself as a "left-leaning Libertarian",  believes the system is in total charge with even Presidents owned by corporate money before they ever step into the Oval office.

Two cases of "blame the victim":

  • The deaf boys who were molested by the priest: it's their parents' fault.
  • The violence against Democrats: it's the Democrats' fault.

Crazy religious guy Bill Donahue blames parents for Catholic Church sex scandals - Donahue blame the church for nothing:

My question, as always, is "how do these guys get on TV???".

Do you see a pattern here? The Democrats are to blame, if there's violence against them (2nd video - rightwing voters getting angry with Obama voters: man and 10 year old daughter rammed by another guy because he had an Obama bumper sticker!!!):

Convicted criminal and now rightwing talk show host G. Gordon Liddy threatens Islam:

  10. Our baseball fantasy league draft was last night. It takes a week, lots of reading and preparation, culminating in a get-together party to finish off the last 150 picks. I do have a slight hangover, and I did neglect the comments all week with studying baseball stats. I am a baseball junky and sports junky as well as a political junky. I sort of keep sports separate from this blog. I don't know if any of you are sports fans and just don't let on to it, but I am. I am also an avid golfer.

So I'm into TWO things big time: politics, sports, and music.

THREE things...I'm into 3 things: politics, sports, and music.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I believe that's Big Jim from the fantasy baseball league? I don't think that's Drumbo. Big Jim commented the other day, that my baseball team sucked. It was NOT drumbo. I'll see if I can find the comment.

I would love it if Big Jim commented here more!!!!!!!!

  12. I've stolen things from emails Big Jim sends me, so he's included in the hat tip.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh, here's another policy this time by Drumbo: Drumbo has tolen me (tolen is a word I invented, it's a form of the word "told") that when he spams my blog pretending he's someone else, he will always tell me the NEXT DAY that it was him. But NOT THE SAME DAY. That's how I knew the baseball comment was NOT him.

Drumbo informed me of this rule yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And I think we should have a vote on adding the word "TOLEN" to the English vocabulary. You know what? I probably did drink too much last night, sorry.............

    ReplyDelete
  15. Disclaimer: I am really not a drinker, I hardly ever drink. Seriously.

  17. I have a great story to tell about the baseball draft, Big Jim can verify this:

About an hour or so into the draft, my wife calls and says she locked herself out of the car. She said the round key to get back in the car was missing from her key chain and she and my daughter were stuck at the Salvation Army in Wilkes-Barre. This was going to ruin the draft! The call was from a number I didn't recognize. Guess what? She also forgot her cell phone! So after trying to get out of it, I said I'd go to Wilkes-Barre which is about 7 miles away. She said she was getting a ride from the woman whose cell phone she used to call me, and she'd be at either AC Moore or the Super Wal-Mart, which isn't near the Salvation Army where the car is. So, as I'm driving, the guys call me and say it's my pick. So I'm looking through my baseball book for a player to draft while driving, and I somehow make a pick. I'm not at the destination yet to pick up my wife. Then I get another call from the guys: "Hey, since you're out, can you pick up a bunch of pizzas and chicken wings?" I said "OK". So I call Grotto Pizza and order 3 large pies and 3 buckets of chicken wings (hot, grand slam, and butter/garlic), $82. I said, "You read me a bunch of specials, can you use any of the specials to bring down the price?" She said, "Well, you can order 200 wings and split them up into the three flavors." "How much would that be?" She started saying things like: "Well, 200 wings is blah blah buckets, times this, oh I forgot this...blah blah blah." I cut her off: "THIS IS GETTING TOO COMPLICATED! Just give me my original order, I don't care if I'm getting screwed."

Then I got to Wal-Mart super center, and I forgot how gigantic it is and my wife doesn't have a cell phone. Holy shit!!! I went to the service desk and asked them to page her. They paged her. I waiting. No one was coming. OH! She said she might be at AC Moore, too! But she has no cell phone! I ran out of Wal Mart SS and by dumb luck, I saw them walking from AC Moore to Wal Mart SS. Thank god!

So NOW...we're passing by the Grotto on the way to her car at the salvation army. We argue about whether to go to Grotto first, or to the car. I stop at the Grotto. While I'm waiting, my daughter comes in with my cell phone from the car: "the guys called: It's your pick again!!! And they want to know if you're getting the wings?" So I run back out to the car and get my baseball book, go back in the Grotto and make my pick." The order comes after way too long, and I take it to the car and off we go to the salvation army to get the other car. We get there, I open the car, and my wife starts to talk to me and I say "I have to go!!!" and speed off with 3 large pizzas and 3 huge buckets of wings doing a balancing act on my passenger seat. The guys call! It's my pick again! So, I'm driving with my right hand balancing the wings/pizza on the seat, the cell phone cradled between my left shoulder and head, and I grab the baseball book. No lights! I turn on the car light and make my pick. "I have one question: did you get the wings???" the guy on the phone asks.

So, finally I get back to the draft with the pizza and wings. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then comes the part "How much money do we owe you for the pizza and wings???" Everyone starts throwing money in. I say: "If it hits $70, I'll be happy".

'Out-of-the-box' CIA think tank proposes concerns over women's rights, fear of terrorism as ways to boost support for Afghan war

Evidently spooked by the collapse of the Dutch government over the country's involvement in Afghanistan, the CIA has put together a strategy proposal to prevent what it fears could be a "precipitous" collapse of support for the war in Afghanistan among European allies.

A document marked "confidential / not for foreign eyes," posted to the Wikileaks Web site, suggests strategies to manipulate European public opinion on the war, particularly in France and Germany.

  35. The "hat tip" thing: I used to hat tip everyone, but it was a pain in the ass, and there were too many hat tips. And then I thought, what if you hat tip someone and they are hat tipping someone? Can't you get into some infinite hat tip loop or something? I was hat tipping someone, and they were hat tipping someone, and they were hat tipping someone, and...

And then I realised, that everyone gets everything from somewhere...unless you write it yourself!

An example: if someone has a youtube I like, and I put it on my blog, why should I hat tip the blog I saw it on, and not the guy who actually made the youtube? And why should I even hat tip HIM, if he uploaded it from somewhere?

I think hat tips are ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And furthermore, if someone steals something from me, I DON'T CARE!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Then at one point, I said there's an unspoken rolling hat tip here.

I actually hat tipped someone once, and THEY told me to hat tip the person THEY got it from.

That was probably the point where I thought: FUCK THESE "HAT TIPS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    HERE, TIP THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Here's another one: once I saw a video on another site (it shall be nameless, it's NONE of the regulars here, though), and I thought I would be nice and I commented: "Nice video". I also had that website in my links. I still do. The person from that website said in THEIR comments: "I see you have the video on your blog. Could you please give us a hat tip???" And I had their link up on my blog, and they didn't have mine on there's, and then they TELL ME to give them a hat tip???

Needless to say, I never commented on their website again. I considered pulling the link off my blog, but I didn't because I think they have a good site. BUT...I never commented there again.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So, the bottom line is: you may like someone's website...but they can personally be a real jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anyone can steal anything they want from this blog any time they want. I actually think of it as a compliment, and would never ASK anyone for a hat tip.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OK, I think that concludes my hat tip rant.

    ReplyDelete
  42. One last thing: how can someone prove you got an idea for a post from their blog? If you're linking to one of their articles, like say Brad Blog...IT'S GOING TO BRAD'S BLOG!!! That's a built in hat tip! Isn't it???

    ReplyDelete
  43. If someone says, like that guy: "Hey, you saw the youtube on MY blog first, I want a hat tip", I can just as easily say: YOU didn't make the video, did you? And furthermore, are you the ONLY site on the entire internet with this video? Does that mean I have to hat tip every single site on the internet with that video, as well as the creator of the video? How about I interview the creator of the video and as HIM IF I SHOULD FUCKING HAT TIP ANYBODY?????????????

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hat tip, schmat tip. If it's good stuff, pass it along post haste.

PS- I wish I got to the draft sooner. "Communication breakdown."
