I love Ron Paul, but I have TWO big problems with him and the "Young Americans for Liberty": they are FOR the Supreme Court ruling taking away limits to corporations giving to politicians and on health care they are "you're on your own free marketers" and think everyone will magically get taken care of in the mystical free market like the olden days...kind of like we alljavascript:void(0) got "taken care of" in this financial crisis with the repeal of Glass-Steagal.
"Young Americans for Liberty", Ron Paul supporters, are just FINE with the Supreme Court's ruling:
I thought "conservatives" were against federal law superceding state law!!! I guess only when it suits their purposes!!! (hypocrites!)
“One day the Constitution of Colorado is the highest law of the state,” said Robert F. Williams, a law professor at Rutgers University. “The next day it’s wastepaper.”

Great blog, sir.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Paul acolyte, but am deeply troubled by the SCOTUS ruling re: corporations. As Glenn Greenwald correctly pointed out, this decision wasn't about the "personhood" of corporations: unfortunately, that still stands. But if we're going to say that First Amendment rights extend to any entity, huge problems arise. First, this simply codifies the state-corporate alliance that Mussolini gave name to. Second, and hugely important if congress is to block this, what if the corporations are foreign-owned? What if the controlling shareholders are Chinese, or Saudi, Israeli, whatever--how does that not directly circumvent the law prohibiting foreign influence on our elections (as if it isn't subverted already, de facto, but for God's sake don't make it de jure). Do foreign interests, controlling American-front corporations, have First Amendment rights to manipulate our democracy?
Congress should pass a law preventing this right from being applied to corporations having more than 5% foreign ownership. Including transparency of ownership for holding companies, mutual and hedge fund ownership, etc. This has to be gutted.
Of course, the whole idea that corporations have personhood is insane on the face of it, and has been ruinous to our country.
Well, I love Ron Paul, too. I am a Ron Paul fan. Like I said, I have only two problems with him: health care and his Young Americans for Liberty stance on the SCOTUS ruling.
ReplyDeleteBesides that, he's right on with everything and a true American patriot, I love him. I used to subscribe to American Free Press and read his columns YEARS ago, before he got big like he is today.
I'm a Glenn Greenwald fan, too, but I also think HE is incorrect: I think he equated "freedom of speech" = money. Money is not free speech.

Many foreign countries have Sovereign Wealth Funds. These are basically Corporations. The NWO which China serves as their template, is now in full swing. ChiMeriKa is closer than any one imagines. China has 2 Trillion in reserve. The FOR SALE sign is up. Before Amerika defaults, they can now sell off [Liquidate] what ever assets are left. Including the Grand Canyon.

Hmmm, intriguing. It would seem that the Pentagon’s interest in Haiti during this crisis just might stretch a bit beyond their normal warm and fuzzy humanitarian intentions. It feels like we’ve been here before. Keep your eyes on the bouncing ball and watch for Big Oil to move into the region shortly. Perhaps this may also serve as a wee bit of gunboat diplomacy targeted at Cuba and, more ominously, a back-up plan to secure reserves in the Empire’s backyard as Obama and the War Machine get ready to take on Venezuela. More will be revealed.

ReplyDeleteMy father has been comatose for a week. He really looked like a goner. He couldn't talk since last Saturday, had involuntary convulsing, actually stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated.
ReplyDeleteToday, 1 week later, he calls my sister from the hospital and is talking totally normal! The nurses said it was a miracle! I just saw him late last night, and he was still comatose. Today, I just got back from visiting him, and was speaking to him totally normal. He's still not 100%, but it was truly a miracle. My sister is an RN and my wife was a nurses aid for 10 years, and they said they never saw anything like this in their life.
I hope it lasts and he stays there, I don't see any reason he shouldn't.

Yeah, I clicked over to Glenn Greenwald expecting fulminations, and was distressed to see him play fiddle to Floyd Abram's fart. You're right, free speech rights for corps is merely free speech to big money. As if they didn't already have that...the old quip about the press being free to he who owns one. But as Olbermann noted, now scum like Rupert Warlock er Moloch ahem Murdock can skip owning the vanity paper and buy the politician outright.
ReplyDeleteSome people are arguing that unions will be able to do this as well. Tell it to the Walmart employees. Tell it to the miners gunned down by the Pinkertons. To the steel workers locked out of their mills by Truman. Explain it after unions themselves are outlawed by the corporate-owned politicians.
I thought I was beyond being shocked by anything, but this is simply beyond belief. It's as if the Supreme Court simply ruled that our new form of government is fascism, and we are all slaves to the corporate-state.

Report: New bin Laden tape emerges
January 24, 2010 7:46 a.m. EST
The CIA has in the past confirmed Al Jazeera reports on tapes from Osama bin Laden.
(CNN) -- A new audio tape allegedly from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden claims responsibility for an attempt to blow up a plane en route to Michigan on Christmas Day and warns the United States of more attacks.
The tape, which aired on the Arabic-language news Web site Al-Jazeera on Sunday, says "the United States will not dream of enjoying safety until we live it in reality in Palestine."
The tape continues: "It is not fair to enjoy that kind of life while our brothers in Gaza live in the worst of miseries."
CNN could not independently confirm the authenticity of the message, but the CIA has in the past confirmed Al-Jazeera reports on tapes from the al Qaeda leader.
In another section of the audio tape that Al-Jazeera broadcast, the voice says: "God willing our attacks will continue as long as you support the Israelis and may peace be on those who follow guidance."
Bin Laden also claims responsibility for the foiled attack on Delta flight 253 in December.

UPDATE 1-Bank plan highlights Volcker's new clout
ReplyDeleteFri Jan 22, 2010 6:13pm EST
By Caren Bohan
WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - When U.S. President Barack Obama launched a fight with Wall Street by announcing a new plan to limit banks' size, the man standing at his side was former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.
Volcker's clout on the White House economic team was on full display as the 6-foot-7-inch longtime adviser took the choice spot next to Obama, who named his proposal to restrict bank trading activities "the Volcker Rule."
The 6-foot-1 Obama referred to Volcker as "this tall guy behind me."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and senior economic adviser Lawrence Summers -- who attended the announcement but at a greater distance from the president -- still wield a tremendous amount of power.
Volcker, who commands respect on Wall Street and among both Democrats and Republicans, is seeing a resurgence of his influence after venting frustrations to friends that he had been left out in the cold when it came to economic decision-making at the White House.
The 82-year-old Volcker was one of Obama's most influential advisers during his 2008 presidential campaign and now chairs a panel of outside economic advisers to the White House.
He had rarely been seen in Washington since the start of the Obama administration and made no secret of a difference in opinion with the White House over how to deal with the problem of "too big to fail" financial firms.
Volcker's fear, shared by some other economists, is that newly consolidated U.S. banks might engage in reckless behavior on the belief that the government would never allow them to fail because of their sheer size. Such risky activity could leave the financial system vulnerable to another crisis, these economists say.
CLOUT
Asked by the New York Times in October about reports he was losing sway with the Obama White House, Volcker retorted that he "did not have influence to start with."
