● WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers unexpectedly cut jobs in February at the steepest rate in nearly five years, a second straight month of employment losses that heightened fears the world's largest economy has skidded into recession. "The question appears no longer to be are we going into a recession but how long and deep it will be," economist Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors Inc. in Holland, Pennsylvania, said.

● A private group told a federal court that the Bush administration made apparently false and misleading statements in court about the White House e-mail controversy. The group asked the judge on Thursday to demand an explanation regarding alleged inconsistencies between testimony at a congressional hearing last week and what the White House told a federal court in January. "This evidence demonstrates defendants' blatant disregard for the truth and the processes of this court," Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington told U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy in court papers. CREW wants the judge to compel the Executive Office of the President to explain why it should not be held in contempt of court.

● In short, what we have here is the worst housing slump in a quarter century, an economy which in January alone lost 17,000 jobs, and The Standard & Poor's 500 Index which has fallen three consecutive months, the longest losing streak since 2003. We also have Americans whose December monthly expenditure on debt service, housing, medical costs, and food and energy bills has risen to an unprecedented 66.9 percent of their total spending, the highest since records began in 1980. According to Ron Blackwell, chief economist at the AFL-CIO, "American workers are suffering a generation-long decline in living standards and rising economic insecurity." To add to this, the four-week moving average of new claims for state unemployment is at the highest level since October 2005, and the University of Michigan¹s consumer sentiment index is marking its lowest point since February 1992 when the economy was emerging from a recession.

The McCain Watch (wake up, people! about McCain!):

● As of this writing, there's no mention of it on the home page of McCain's Web site. There's no mention of it all on the Republican National Committee's home page. In fact, I can't find any mention whatsoever of the event on either Web site at all. (It's like: Bush Who?) But on the Democratic National Committee Web site, the lead headline blares: "Bush Endorses John McCain as His Successor."

● Funny: McCain's Chances Plummet From 50% to 0% After Bush Endorsement

Democracy NOW! DISH channels 9410 & 9415, DirecTV channel 275:

McCain Embraces Endorsement From Anti-Catholic, Anti-Gay, Anti-Muslim Televangelist John Hagee

Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain has openly embraced the endorsement of controversial televangelist John Hagee, the founder of Christians United for Israel and the senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. Hagee has come under criticism for his views on homosexuality, Islam, the Catholic Church and even the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We speak with Sarah Posner, author of "God"s Profits: Faith Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters."

In discussions of high-profile supporters of presidential candidates, many in the media have focused on Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and his endorsement of Barack Obama. During the pivotal Democratic presidential debate in Cleveland last week, MSNBC moderator Tim Russert pressed Obama on the issue.

The day after that debate, Republican nominee, Senator John McCain, received a controversial endorsement of his own–from televangelist, John Hagee. He is the founder of the Christian Zionist group, Christians United for Israel and is the senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. Hagee has come under criticism for his controversial statements about homosexuality, Islam, the Catholic Church, and women. In contrast with Obama’s repeated denunciations of Farrakhan, McCain openly embraced Hagee’s endorsement. When confronted about Hagee’s controversial views, McCain said he was “proud” of Hagee and welcomed his support.
